Black women face persistent barriers to quality jobs, fair pay and advancement in the labor market — not because they lack qualifications, but because of occupational segregation and workplace discrimination. This report, “Black Women and Dangerous and Treacherous Work: Causes and Fixes for Occupational Segregation and Inequitable Pay,” is part of our ongoing Dangerous and Treacherous Work series; an investigation into the specific challenges Black women face in the workforce. Among the findings:Qualified Black women are crowded out of 58 percent of occupations compared with white men, 53 percent compared with white women and 54 percent compared with Black men.
Drawing on national data and interviews with 55 Black women, this report challenges narratives that blame inequity on individual choices or credentials. It calls on policymakers, employers and advocates to address discriminatory hiring, promotion and pay practices and build an economy where Black women can thrive.
